Paid Surveys

Pinecone Research Get Paid For Survey Participation

Pinecone Research paid surveys – This is legitimate and one of the best paid survey companies.

You get paid a flat $3 for each survey you do. The surveys only take 5 – 10 minutes. There is no minimum for payout. They will send you the first $3 via check in the mail then after that you can request a virtual visa card or choose among a wide variety of gift cards or merchandise. I prefer to get the virtual Visa cards because you can use that like cash.

Whenever you complete a survey $3.00 will be added to your account. You may “cash out” at anytime and get your Visa or gift card via email.

I have included a copy of the first check they sent. $3 is not a lot by itself but it only took 5 minutes of answering questions about grocery items to get it and I have gotten numerous more $3 credits since I got the check.

So it is not a fortune, not get rich quick but it is 100% real

Why Would A Company Want To Pay Me For Doing Surveys?

Companies compete in the marketplace to sell their products and services. To be successful marketers need to know and understand what consumers think. They can gain a better understanding of the market with the help of people like you who share their opinions. This, in turn, helps them to make more sales. For this service they are willing to pay you well for your time.

Major, well known, companies contract with various paid survey companies for their opinion polls and consumer research. The survey companies then send invitations via email to their registered members. Any member may at that time decide to do or ignore the survey. You only need do the ones you want, you are not obligated to do them all. However, keep in mind that the more of them you complete the more money you will earn.

Paid surveys are a very easy “earn at your own pace” type opportunity.

Making money in your spare time at home is easy with paid surveys. Simply complete online survey forms with your thoughts and opinions about everything from pets and family, to groceries and cosmetics and from insurance and medicine to restaurants and movies and just about anything in between.

Students, work-at-home parents or those just needing to find a source of some extra income have often found the right mix between time, effort and money by utilizing a number of the Paid Survey sites that can be found online.

Marketing Research requires input and ideas to know if their new product or idea would be appealing or if it needs to be taken back and reworked into a more marketable form. In order to acquire this knowledge the company will pay a large sum to collect the thoughts and opinions of a large randomly selected cross-section of the population. With the rise of the Internet, this task has become much simpler and more effective.

Once they have developed a questionnaire to gather the opinions and ideas they will contact one of the established online survey sites to present it to their members for completion. The company then pays the survey site and they in turn will disburse a set amount to each individual that completes the survey for them.

How To Use Rebates To Get More For Less

Rebates are an excellent way to save money! It’s not uncommon for a shopper to combine a coupon with a rebate and save a significant amount on their purchase. Often you can also get loyalty points (Kroger Points, etc). In fact shoppers often get products “Free After Rebate.”

How To Get Rebates!
How To Get Rebates!

When you are planning to make a purchase you should consider rebates and other way ways to save money. The goal isn’t to get a cheaper item. What we want is to get the best quality at the best price. Sometimes we buy toys. Other times we buy things we really don’t want to. You don’t want to buy a new water heater or a new air-conditioner, but sometimes you have to. On the other hand we love to buy new TVs, new computers and other toys. And lets not forget about food!

So many things we have to spend money on. But if you manage your spending and put time into planning you can expand your buying power tremendously.

Rebates are a great way to buy more for less. Usually you have to wait for the rebate but it’s almost like money in the bank. Some rebate processors pay monthly, other pay quarterly. Limits and details vary among sites so be sure to read through the FAQs to find out the most important information.

It doesn’t matter whether you are looking to buy a printer, computer, or television; or if you are interested in new clothing, furniture, and garden supplies.

When spending your money make the best decision
based upon the rebate values and price comparisons.

First check the ibotta app on your phone to find rebates on things you need. Next, check with an online rebates site like eBates or SavingStar to see what they are offering in terms of rebates at a particular store(s) where you plan to shop. Don’t make a decision yet. You are researching. Next, you can compare prices and availabilities among several stores.  Generally, you would be making your purchase online but this isn’t always the case.

Keep in mind that stores often offer the same items online at lower prices than what you might see locally. This is especially true with electronics and “big ticket” items.

Here is my own experience in purchasing a new printer:

After shopping around I decided on a printer from that was priced at $89.00. I was able to get a 4% rebate through eBates. All I had to do to get that was to login to my account and click their link to go to Not long after the purchase was complete the rebate showed up as a credit in my account.

eBates Rebate – $3.56
Online Price Difference – $7.00

Total Savings – $10.56 (Nearly 12%)

It really doesn’t matter if you are buying “big ticket” items or everyday household items and groceries. Taking advantage of rebates when you shop is just good wisdom!

Ground Insects Used To Dye Food And Drinks

In today’s health conscious society, many consumers have became avid label readers of the products they purchase, especially food products. For someone suffering from high cholesterol, high blood pressure or other health problems, knowing which products to avoid or limit can help restore them to a better state of health. But, simply checking a label for fat or sodium content may not be enough, you may also want to check to see if the product contains ground up bugs!

Food Dye Made From Ground Insects

The cochineal (Dactylopius coccus)

Although it is not widely known, companies have been using a dye made from insects in many different types of products, including food, for many years. These insects, Dactylopius coccus, live on cacti and are native to South and North America. Commonly known as cochineal, these scale insects are less than one-quarter inch long and have flat, oval shaped bodies. The dye is the result of the carminic acid that is produced by the insect as a natural repellent for other insect predators. It is derived from the female cochineal and from the eggs.

Collecting Cochineal
Collecting Cochineal

Cochineal dye has ancient origins, being used by both the Mayans and the Aztecs as a textile dye as far back as the 10th century.

By the 17th century, cochineal was exported around the world and became a commodity that was considered as valuable as silver and gold.

The deep, vibrant colored textiles produced by the dye were even highly sought after by royalty.

But, with the introduction of artificial dyes that were easier and less expensive to produce, the demand for cochineal dye fell sharply.

However, the industry is thriving again after the discovery of the carcinogenic properties found in many of the artificial dyes.

While the thought of crushed bugs adding color to the foods we eat may not be pleasant, it could be considered a better alternative than artificial dyes.

Synthetic dyes like Red No. 40 and Red No. 2 are derived from byproducts of petroleum and coal and pose a much more serious health risk than natural dye derived from crushed bugs.

The Cochineal (Dactylopius coccus)
The Cochineal (Dactylopius coccus)

In 1998, a consumer advocacy group, The Center for Science in Public Interest (CSPI), urged the Food and Drug Administration to either ban the dye or to pass regulation requiring companies to list cochineal dye in the ingredient section of the label.

After more than a decade, the FDA finally passed a regulation that required companies to include the dye by name on the ingredient list of all food and cosmetic products containing cochineal in 2009.

And, in 2006 the FDA announced they would do a separate review of ingredient lists on prescription drugs that contain dyes derived from cochineal.

Understandably, manufacturers were strongly opposed to including “insect-based coloring or dye” on their labels. So, the FDA allowed them to simply add “cochineal extract” or “carmine”, a purer dye created through a different process. Although those are the two most commonly used phrases for the coloring it may also be listed as:

  • Natural Red 4
  • Crimson Lake
  • E120
  • Carminic Acid

Prior to 2009, this dye made from powdered bugs was simply listed as “natural and artificial coloring” or “artificial coloring.”

Insect Food Dyes – Health Risks?

While the idea of crushed bugs in your favorite foods and drinks may not be appetizing, the bigger concern for many is the health risks.

In an effort to protect consumers, the CSPI also requested that companies be required to state that “”carmine may cause severe allergic reactions and anaphylactic shock and that it is derived from insects. The FDA declined this request stating that they had “found no evidence of a significant hazard to the general population.”

Despite the FDA’s claim, the CSPI states that the dye has been linked to “dozens of cases of anaphylactic shock and near-death.”

May Vegetarians And Vegans Consume Insects?

Along with a large number of general consumers, some people are opposed to cochineal food colorants due to lifestyle choices or religious beliefs. Many vegetarians and vegans consider the additive to be “non-vegan” because it is derived from insects.

Insects In Food Kosher?

And, while some suppliers literally claim to have a “Kosher Certificate”, a colorant made from insects simply cannot be kosher! Over the last few years, grievances from these communities have helped to bring this subject to the public’s attention.

How Wide Spread Are Cochineal Dyes In Products We Use Everyday?

So, how wide spread is the use of cochineal dyes in the products we use everyday?

As of now there isn’t a complete list of every product that uses this natural dye, but it’s sure to reach into the thousands. Not only is it used in the food industry, it’s also used in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Pharmaceutical companies use the dye to color everything from pills to ointments. And, cosmetic companies use it in a variety of products including lipsticks, blushes, rouge and face powder. It can even be found in body care products such as shampoo, soap and lotions.

Even with it’s use in other industries, the main industries consumers are concerned about is it’s use in the food industry. It is fairly certain that at one time or another, maybe even on a regular basis, each and every consumer has eaten products containing dye made from crushed bugs. It’s in such a wide range of food products that there is little chance of avoiding every food that contains cochineal.

Two of the most prominent yogurt manufactures, Yoplait and Dannon, both use cochineal or carmine in their products. It can be found in chewing gum, candy, popsicles and ice cream. Some manufacturers add it to frozen meat and fish and it can even be found in sausage. Jellies, jams, marmalades, syrups, canned fruits, ketchup, canned soups, gelatin, cake icings, dry mixes, cereal and bakery products are among the limitless number of items whose colors are enhanced with cochineal.

Drinks Colored With Cochineal Dye

Foods aren’t the only products that contain this controversial dye, it is also used in many drinks.

Any pre-made drink or powdered drink mix that is red almost certainly contains cochineal. These include milk based beverages, energy drinks, soft drinks, fruit drinks and even some alcoholic drinks. But, while the most common color of products containing cochineal is red, it can also be different shades of pinks or purple depending on how the colorant is processed.

Some companies like Starbucks have already stopped using cochineal, while other like Dannon have announced they will continue to use the coloring in their products.

The bottom line is that it is up to you as a consumer to decide if you would prefer to use products with an insect based dye or with synthetic dyes.

Connie Corder
Connie Corder

“You now have another good reason to read ingredient labels and weigh the options.

While the idea of consuming products with insect based colors definitely isn’t appetizing, it may be a much safer alternative to the health risks of synthetic ones.”

Mystery Shopping Career Advice

An entrepreneur will make sacrifices so that he/she can live a life like others will only dream of living. You can still enjoy some of the fine things in life. Freelance as a mystery shopper in your area. Many Fortune & Global 500 companies rely on the feedback from quality certified Mystery Shoppers to help improve their level of customer service. Mystery shoppers get an opportunity to enjoy being a customer at restaurants, retail stores, grocery stores, dealerships and financial institutions or a guest at a casino, hotel or resort.

Mystery Shopping Responsibilities

Mystery Shoppers are responsible for meeting deadlines, following detailed instructions and writing fact-based reports to provide our clients with actionable data. If they do not meet the requirements any expenses will not be reimbursed. Good Mystery Shop companies will offer training and evaluations to make sure the shopper is ready for his or her assignment.

There is no formal certification to be a Mystery Shopper. A Mystery Shopper must be 21 years of age or older; must have reliable transportation; must have good written communication skills; must be able to focus on details and must have full internet access.

It is best not to use a computer located in public facilities (i.e. libraries, computer labs) due to security settings in place to protect the identity of Mystery Shoppers. Another requirement is that you need to be able to upload photographs and receipts to a website.

Companies that hire Mystery Shoppers provide training and certification for their shoppers. A representative is assigned to each state to help Mystery Shoppers. The representative will also be responsible for evaluating each report. If the report does not meet the specification of the client company the report will be rejected. Your representative from the company will provide training on how to complete each company’s evaluation. Each assignment is different. It all depends on what the client company would like to evaluate.

There are impersonators that portray themselves as reputable Mystery Shop companies.

Be careful and please do not do any the following activities:

1. Cash or deposit a check as part of a mystery shopping assignment OR for any other service (such as child care, purchase of ANY product/service, etc.).

2. Transfer funds to an account as part of a mystery shopping assignment.

3. Respond to a letter via the mail telling you that you have been selected to participate in a paid consumer research program.

4. Meet with a representative in any area of the country to complete an assignment.

5. Pay for and complete on-site training to become a mystery shopper.

Mystery Shopping is a new adventurous freelance opportunity for me. I never knew jobs like this existed. My first assignment was for National Shopping Service. I ordered and took pictures of pizzas for a local pizza shop. Just recently I discovered a website called Shadow Shoppers. This website put me in contact with many more mystery shopping companies. Recently, I have done assignments for coffee shops, dealerships, banks and shoe stores. I am creating a list of all the mystery shop companies along with their compensation plan. This will keep me organized. It helps to know when and how you will be reimbursed for your expenses.

Many companies are looking to hire mystery shoppers. If you have any questions about a freelance opportunity please contact me. I am working on an article to publish more information about legitimate companies.

Is Selling Avon Worth It?

The Real Profit Percentage

Avon recruits tons of women by advertising their 40 – 50 percent commission rate. While this is true in the portion of the sale sense, it is not the whole situation. Just to get to the 40% commission rate, you need to sell at least $425 worth of Avon products every campaign. Since the average person spends around $25 per order, you would need 17 customers every 2 weeks.

Example Scenarios

The examples are going to be on the generous side. I am not going to include gas costs since everyone gets a different gas mileage. I am also going to assume that you will be delivering all of your orders on your own. However, I can almost guarantee that if you are selling enough Avon products to make a decent profit, you are not going to be able to handle it all on your own. Keep that in mind as you look at the figures.

Casual Avon Representative Scenario

You order and hand out 20 brochures. You get 5 orders for an average of $25 each. This is a total order amount of $125. You deliver each order yourself in a delivery bag.

  • 20% Commission on order = $25.00
  • Processing Fees Collected = $3.75
  • One Simple Fee = ($7.95)
  • 10 Brochures = ($5.75)
  • Bags = ($0.63)

Total = $14.42

Small Business Avon Representative Scenario

You order and hand out 40 brochures. You get 10 orders for an average of $25 each. This is a total order amount of $250. You deliver each order yourself in a delivery bag.

  • 30% Commission on order = $75.00
  • Processing Fees Collected = $7.50
  • One Simple Fee = ($6.95)
  • 40 Brochures = ($12.10)
  • Bags = ($1.25)

Total = $62.20

Medium-Sized Business Avon Representative Scenario

You order and hand out 100 brochures. You get 25 orders for an average of $25 each. This is a total order amount of $625. You deliver each order yourself in a delivery bag.

  • 40% Commission on order = $250.00
  • Processing Fees Collected = $18.75
  • One Simple Fee = ($8.95)
  • 100 Brochures = ($19.00)
  • Bags = ($3.13)

Total = $237.67

Hardcore Business Avon Representative Scenario

You order and hand out 300 brochures. You get 75 orders for an average of $25 each. This is a total order amount of $1875. You deliver each order yourself in a delivery bag.

  • 50% Commission on order = $937.50
  • Processing Fees Collected = $56.25
  • One Simple Fee = ($10.95)
  • 300 Brochures = ($45.00)
  • Bags = ($9.38)

Total = $928.42

These numbers are all based on each campaign, which span a period of two weeks. Just to make $928.42, you are going to have to find at least 75 paying customers. Imagine doing this on your own every two weeks. Every customer is not going to order something from you every campaign.

Selling Avon is just like opening up your own store. The only difference is that you wont have a physical building as your storefront. There will still be costs of merchandise, employees, office supplies, etc. If you can’t think of selling Avon as a business, you are bound to lose money and fail in the long run.

The Illuminati – Some Thoughts On This Secret Society

illuminati seal
The Great “Illuminati” Seal

Some thoughts on the Illuminati…

Well as far as a secret society goes the Illuminati haven’t done a very good job at remaining secret in recent years have they?

As far as history is concerned I think it is true to say that the Illuminati were a secret society, said to have formed in the late 18th Century in Bavaria – well if we are trying to be correct a date of 1776 has been proposed. It is difficult to piece together any meaningful history of this ‘society’ as the whole subject has become tainted with poorly referenced conspiracy paranoia, pseudo-historical analyses and the odd fraud (hoax) or two.

Starting with the choice of name – Illuminati – it seems that the society professed to be in line with some kind of information or approach that made its members ‘the enlightened’. It is likely that they had a republican political agenda which included the abolition of monarchies. It is further suggested that they tried to bring about change by means of subterfuge, secrecy, and conspiracy, including the infiltration of other organizations. They were not very successful and were destroyed, or at least outlawed, within fifteen years of their origin (Pipes 1997).

The founder is reputed to be Adam Weishaupt from the University of Ingolstadt and it appears that the society’s aims were closely linked to ideas from the Enlightenment i.e. to combat religious thinking and promote and encourage rationalism. Wieshaupt was an anti-monarchist and secularist which, obviously, informed the nature of the society he created. In 1777, Karl Theodor became ruler of Bavaria and, in 1784, his government banned all secret societies including the Illuminati and they disbanded (or perhaps were imprisoned, ‘destroyed’ or otherwise dispatched!)

There is no empirical evidence that this society survived the 18th Century.

What we hear of today is a melange of conspiracy theories from which have at their core the notion of some kind of elite, powerful and probably wealthy ‘secret society’ behind veils of other ‘secret’ or at least ‘clandestine’ groups.

Like an onion skin, although conspiracy theorists would prefer the image of a pyramid, the outer layers are the lowest levels of the New World Order movers and shakers and at the core can be found the Illuminati.

Sometimes we are told that this inner core of is run by a number of key families (13 is often quoted for effect more than genealogy) whose ‘bloodlines’ are linked and perhaps manipulated by visitors from another world.

The All Seeing Eye

This inner core of people is so secret that the families are actually named on several websites…Their existence is so shadowy that they insist on leaving symbols of their very existence behind for us mere mortals to discover…

This then is the real Illuminati!

Seems like they’re not doing a very good job at keeping their manipulative presence hidden!

I mean stop for a moment to consider some simple ideas.

The bloodlines of monarchy and aristocracy are very likely to be linked in any case, what with marriage being the vehicle by which alliances were made. Such links do not require the organizing agents of ‘secret’ human societies let alone the interference from some passing aliens – or am I missing the point?

Of course there are ‘symbols’ which seem to survive and be repeated from time to time and place to place. As a species we are very good at creating symbolic language and meaningful patterns (you’re reading some right now)… AND of course some ‘magical symbols’ will form part of our everyday society as they have been a part of our psyche for a very long time. Assuming these symbols need to have any other significance is a bit of a stretch. The ‘Great Seal’ on US currency is often quoted as being Masonic or Illuminati in origin having been designed by Illuminati, or at least High Degree Freemasons. If you really check this story out (see Skeptoid) there are more than enough questions raised which serve to question the key assumptions in the conspiracy theorists rhetoric.

What do Governments do?

They rule, they plan, they organize, they fight, they assert sovereignty!

There’s no need to imagine a global conspiracy to explain the actions of Governments.

Now here’s where there is, perhaps, an element of truth in all of the Conspiracy Theories you have ever heard. It seems obvious to me that Governments cannot tell us the truth all of the time, truth after all is a relative concept, and there are things that must be on a need to know basis. More importantly some major Governments have been shown to be involved with somewhat dodgy dealings and certainly individuals within Governments are not above corruption, error and simply being wrong.

The simple fact the ‘the truth outs’ from some of these accidental, and not so accidental, cover-ups seems to belie the existence of ability to ‘keep’ secrets of any real magnitude.

Perhaps there is a rule of thumb that is worth exploring – the more people who need to be involved in any form of cover-up or covert action the LESS likely it is to be possible.

Google returns over 34,000,000 results for a search on Illuminati and a mere 1,000,000 for a search on Illuminati + Sceptic. Surely that suggests something!

The Illuminati (plural of Latin illuminatus, “enlightened”) is a name given to several groups, both real and fictitious. Historically, the name refers to the Bavarian Illuminati, an Enlightenment-era secret society founded on May 1, 1776. The society’s goals were to oppose superstition, prejudice, religious influence over public life and abuses of state power, and to support women’s education and gender equality.  ~

In the paranoid mind, the Illuminati succeeded in their goals, and have now infiltrated every government and every aspect of society. They are responsible for every evil and every unjust act that ever occurs anywhere; the fact that absolutely no evidence of their existence can be found only serves to make them stronger and more frightening. They are the demon in the closet, and will probably never disappear from the paranoid fantasy world of right-wing conspiracy theorists. – New England Skeptical Society

“Paranoid conspiracy theorists (PCTs) believe the Illuminati cabal still exists, either in its original form or as a paradigm for later cabals..” –
